Cyclone Phailin Updates on Support, Response and Coordination

Severe Cyclonic Storm “PHAILIN”
Affected States : Odisha & Andhra Pradesh

The very severe cyclonic storm, PHAILIN over east central Bay of Bengal moved westwards  and expected to hit by evening of 12th October, 2013 as a very severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 190-200 kmph.
Around 12 million people may be affected, 600 buildings have been identified as cyclone shelters, and people are being evacuated from areas near the coast, including Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Jagatsinghapur districts in Odisha

Early Warnings & Alerts:
·       Forecast – Heavy Rains / Thundershower would occur at most places over Odisha during next 24 hrs. Storm surge with height of around 2.0-2.5m. wind speed reaching 190-200 kmph
·       Fisherman Warning – All to return to coast on an immediate basis and advised not to venture into sea

Andhra Pradesh
·       Commandant 10 NDRF requested to move three NDRF teams to Srikakulam and one each to Vizinagaram, Visakhaptnam and W.Godavari districts on 11th October 2013
·       GoI/Secretary, Defence requested to provide helicopters to the State and also alert Army stationed in Hyderabad and Naval authorities in Visakhapatnam to move to affected areas at short notice on request of GoAP
·       As many as 64,000 people in the north coastal districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh are being evacuated to safer places as 'super cyclone' Phailin is expected to hit the Bay of Bengal coast between Srikakulam and Gopalpur in Odisha by 12th October 2013 evening

·       Agencies were assigned to evacuate the people and to check the relief material available in the cyclone relief shelters.
·       The Government has asked to focus on the 7 most vulnerable Districts namely: Puri, Nayagarh, Khurdha, Kendrapada, jagatsinghapur, Ganjam, Gajapati and Balasore.
·       Report has been received that people were being evacuated from Puri District.
