An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 occurred on 18th September at 18:11 hrs IST in Sikkim-Nepal Border region. The preliminary hypo-central parameters of this earthquake, as estimated by the Seismic Monitoring Network of India Meteorological Department (IMD) are given below: Date of occurrence : 18/09/2011 Time : 18:11 hrs (IST) Magnitude : 6.8 Focal depth : 10 Km Epiecentre Latitude & Longitude : 27.7oN & 88.2 oERegion : Sikkim-Nepal Border region.

WEATHER OVER WEST BENGAL & SIKKIM DURING NEXT 48 HOURS

SUBJECT: WEATHER OVER WEST BENGAL & SIKKIM DURING NEXT 48 HOURS

Observed Weather:
Due to widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places along
with isolated extremely heavy falls over West Bengal & Sikkim, monsoon was
vigorous during past 24 hours ending at 0830 hours IST of today the 18
th
September 2011. The
chief amounts of rainfall (≥ 7 cm) recorded at 0830 hours IST are: Jalpaiguri-26, Cooch
Behar-24, Alipurduar-23, Pundibari and Domohani -22 each, Chepan-21, Barobhisha-20,
Kumargram-19, Mathabhanga, Raiganj and Falakata-18 each, Nh21 Bridge-17, Gajoldoba-16,
Bagdogra, Murti and Hasimara-13 each, Barrackpur-12, Nagarkata, Champasari and
Budaduar-11 each, Sevoke-10, Neora,Chengmari/Diana-9 each and Kalyani-8.
From 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of today, the 18
th
September 2011, widespread
rainfall with isolated heavy fall also occurred over Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and
fairly widespread over Gangetic West Bengal. The chief amounts of rainfall (2 cm and above)
recorded at 1730 hours IST of today are: Siliguri-10, Jalpaiguri-3, Gangtok and Bankura-2 each

Synoptic Features:
1. A low pressure area lies over Sub Himalayan West Bengal and neighbourhood.
2. The axis of monsoon trough at mean sea level is close to the foothills of Himalayas.
Forecast and Warning:
Widespread rainfall would occur over Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and fairly
widespread over Gangetic West Bengal during next 48 hours.
Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall would occur over Sub Himalayan West Bengal
& Sikkim and isolated heavy over Gangetic West Bengal during next 48 hours.
